Humble Beginnings:
In a world where language and culture often create obstacles, ESL Connexus was founded with a bold vision: to create a world where language barriers no longer restrict opportunities. This vision took shape when Teacher Josh lived in Amman, Jordan. In 2006, he started an English Club in his home for a few Jordanian friends. The club quickly grew from three students to twenty, captivating Josh's passion. He realized that language was the key to understanding, progress, and a brighter future.
In 2008, Josh took a significant step by opening an English center in partnership with the Jordanian Ministry of Social Development. This center became a welcoming space for both Jordanians and refugees to learn English at an affordable cost. During the first semester, the center attracted over 75 students, marking the beginning of a journey to bridge cultural divides and empower individuals through language education.
Early Years: Building a Foundation
The early years of ESL Connexus were distinguished by a steadfast commitment to excellence in language education. The organization initially offered English language courses designed to cater to the diverse needs of students from various backgrounds. By emphasizing cultural immersion and interactive learning, ESL Connexus rapidly earned recognition for its pioneering approach to language instruction. In 2016, ESL Connexus collaborated with a local non-profit in Indianapolis to provide English classes for Asian, Syrian, Iraqi, and African immigrants. Drawing from his personal experience as an expatriate in the Middle East, Josh understood the crucial importance of teaching English to these immigrants, enabling them to not only survive but thrive in the United States.
Growing Participator Approach: A Breakthrough
A significant milestone in ESL Connexus's journey was the adoption of the Growing Participator Approach (GPA). This method emphasized active participation and engagement, transforming the learning experience for students. By integrating GPA into its curriculum, ESL Connexus enhanced its ability to connect with learners on a deeper level, fostering a sense of community and shared growth.
